Lil sat waiting for Nim to show up.
It was his turn to come up with an idea to “wow” the kids. She had helped him set up a fort last night and had just barely made it back before the girls woke up.
They had so much fun that Nim wanted to try getting together every night.
Of course, they’d have to be back to their posts by morning in order to observe good, and bad, behavior.
“Pssst!”
Lil whipped around to see Nim trying to get in through the front door.
“You scared me Nim!” she said as she pulled him through a crack. “I told you I’d leave the back door open.”
“Sorry,” Nim mumbled while straightening his hat.
Nim took a spin around the room stopping and shaking his head every few feet.
“No, that won’t work,” he whispered.
“Nim, what are you doing? You are talking to yourself like Starlight does when she’s had too much cotton candy.”
“What? Oh. Yes, sorry. I’m just trying to figure out where the best spot to set up would be.”
Lil waited patiently for him to share his plan.
“There’s nothing for it. We’ll just have to make our own.”
“Our own? Our own what?”
“Fireplace. You know, for the stockings.”
Lil looked at him blankly.
“Oh! I didn’t tell you. I brought these.”
He pulled out two tiny stockings. One with his name and one with Lil’s name painted on the front.
Lil’s eyes sparkled as she somersaulted through the air.
“Nim! These are perfect!”
“I thought we could hang them from the fireplace and ask the kids to fill them with treats for us to eat while we set up for the night.”
“What a great idea Nim!
Working side by side, they built a cozy little hearth and hung Lil’s stocking from the mantle.
“There,” said Nim.
“Yes, it’s perfect!”
Lil sat next to the fire, a happy smile on her face.
“Ok, I’d better get back and build mine before it’s too late!” said Nim.
And with a wink, he grabbed his stocking and flew back to the boys.
