Greedy Elf Hogs Spotlight, Angering Colleagues

North Pole Gazette
By Sparkly Sprinkles

Ludicrous Lil, as she has sometimes been called, angered colleagues Nim, Figgy and Pixie when she rudely interrupted an interview by spelling her name in order to make sure this reporter spelled it correctly. As if L-I-L is so difficult to spell.

“Now you’ve done it,” Nim was heard to say after this over-the-top and obvious grab for more publicity than her fellow Mischief Makers. Is this the type of behavior we can expect from the Mischief Makers? Only time will tell.

The hospital buzzed with excitement as the elves prepared a dazzling light display in the courtyard for the children to enjoy. So far, the hospital staff and patients were delighted with the antics of the mischief makers…messes and all. And, except for a few hiccups here and there, all was going well.

Sparkly Sprinkles sat in the corner of the courtyard smiling suspiciously and filling her notebook.

“She’s probably writing something terrible about us,” hissed Lil, still smarting over Sparkly’s latest character assassination.

“I don’t see what she could possibly find about tonight’s festivities,” said Nim as he pulled a string of lights across the cafeteria. “We are decorating with lights, nothing too sinister about that.”

“Oh I wouldn’t put it past her,” grumbled Pixie. “She has a real talent for spinning tales.”

Glitter bounded up to the group, breathless and agitated.

“I’ve just come from Santa’s office,” Glitter whispered, her eyes flicking toward the nosy reporter.

Nim raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What is it, Glitter?”

“It’s about that book. The one they found in the Grime and Goo department,” Glitter replied. “Santa believes it might not be a legend after all. He’s sending a team to investigate a rumored location of the forgotten mailbox.”

Lil frowned. “A mailbox?”

“Yes,” Glitter said, casting a wary glance at Sparkly Sprinkles. “According to the book, there may be a mailbox where all these lost letters were sent. A forgotten mailbox. But Santa suspects someone might be trying to interfere.” She inclined her antlers at Sparkly.

“Oh she’ll interfere all right,” said Lil. “Interfere, then smear. She’s good at that.”

“Exactly,” Glitter nodded. “There’s a Twinkling Trail, an ancient magical path, that leads to the mailbox. It’s said to glow faintly under the light of the Aurora Borealis. Santa wants us to check it out.”

“Us?” asked Nim.

“Yes, Santa has asked me to come and get you. He needs your help.”

Nim nodded and turned to his three friends. “Right. Lil, Pixie, and Figgy, can you guys keep an eye out and make sure Sparkly doesn’t catch wind of this. We can’t trust her with something this important.”

“We’re on it!” said Figgy.

“You don’t understand,” said Glitter. “Santa has requested help…from all of us.”

After a few moments of shocked silence as they digested Glitter’s news, the four veteran elves took a collective breath and straightened their shoulders.

“When do we leave?” asked Lil.

As she spoke, 6 elves zoomed through the window, landing in unison next to Glitter.

“Immediately,” said Glitter, gesturing to the six newcomers. “This is your replacement team.”

The six elves saluted as they each introduced themselves.

“Hello Sirs, and Ma’ams! I’m Bubbles McJinglepants, leader of the Jingle Jest Squad!”

“The Jingle Jest Squad?” asked a mystified Pixie under her breath.

In turn, each member of the squad stepped forward and saluted.

“Snickerdoodle McSparklepuff!”

“Wiggly Wobblewhisk!”

“Gigglesnort Tinseltoes!”

“SnuggleMuffin Twinkleberry!”

“Melvin Martin!”

“Er, nice to meet you,” said Nim as the squad scattered and seemed to work seamlessly to finish the light display. Even Sparkly was mystified by this group of energetic elves racing around and decorating at top speed.

“Ready?” asked Glitter.

With one final look at Sparkly, who was heading their way with a determined glint in her eyes, Glitter galloped off with Nim, Lil, Pixie and Figgy zipping at her hooves.

Santa’s Got a Secret…and it’s a big one!

North Pole Gazette
Reported by Sparkly Sprinkles

Santa’s behavior of late has been a little odd. He’s more secretive than usual. Sources at The Frosty Snowman tell me that ol’ Chris Kringle is hiding something.

“Santa has enough to worry about,” said one anonymous source. One can only speculate what “enough” is. Trouble in the Toy Shop? Perhaps problems with Mrs Claus? Or is it something more…sinister? Only time will tell and this reporter is on the job!

“She must have been at The Frosty Snowman and overheard our conversation,” said Glitter angrily.

Nim and Lil watched, wide-eyed, as Glitter galloped back and forth in front of Santa’s toy shop whipping her antlers and flashing her eyes. They’d rarely seen Glitter this angry.

“How dare that, that candy cane brained jigglesnort!”

“Whoa, Glitter,” said Figgy. “I think that is going a bit far, don’t you?”

Pixie nodded her head, shocked.

“I’m sorry.” Glitter deflated. “It’s just that…Santa has enough going on without Stinky Sprinkly putting her big pen in his face.”

“You keep saying that, Glitter. What’s going on with Santa?” asked Nim.

Glitter paused. “You know how I told you that there was an emergency at the Grime and Goo section of the toy department?”

The elves nodded.

“It was less an emergency and more a discovery.”

Pixie raised a brow. “Discovery of what?”

“A book.”

“Uh, what?”

“A dusty old book was found under one of the gloop machines. Apparently it was being used to even out the legs.”

“Still not seeing the big deal here, Glitter,” said Figgy.

The book was called Forgotten Wishes and it is a story about a hidden mailbox full of letters that have been lost over the years.”

The four elves stared blankly at her.

“Letters to Santa.”

Lil gasped. “You don’t mean…wish lists?”

Glitter nodded.

“But it’s just a story, right?” asked Pixie hopefully. “A legend?”

“We don’t really know…yet,” said Glitter. “But Santa is taking this very seriously. If there are children out there who never received what was on their wish lists…let’s just say we hope it’s just a story.”

The clocktower chimed, pulling the elves out of their reverie.

“We’d better get going,” said Nim. “We’ve got a puppet show to organize.”

“Keep us posted, Glitter,” said Lil. “And let us know if there is anything we can do to help.”

Glittered nodded and trotted to the stables while the four elves shot to the skies and flew toward the hospital.

When they landed in the Community Room of the hospital, Sparkly Sprinkles was already there, tapping her red pen to her pointy chin. “Late, aren’t we?”

A collective groan filled the air.

“Why you little–,” began Pixie.

“Hello, Sparkly!!” interrupted Lil rather loudly. “I hope you’ve come ready to report on the wonderful puppet show we are putting on tonight.”

Sparkly couldn’t quite mask her look of shock at being addressed so…civilly. Smiling slowly, she tapped her notebook with her sparkling red pen. “Oh yes, Pil, I’m ready to…tell all.”

“It’s Lil, actually. You know, L as in ludicrous, I as in insincere, and then another L as in libelous.”

The saccharine smile fell from Sparkly’s face. She cleared her throat, glared at Lil, and started scribbling furiously.

“Now you’ve done it,” Nim muttered with a smile.

Angry Mischief Makers Cause Riot in Hospital Cafeteria, Injuries Reported

North Pole Gazette
Reported by Sparkly Sprinkles

All is not well at the Children’s Hospital. While attempting to set up a soothing scene of children playing, four angry Mischief Makers caused a riot after Biggy, a small, mean looking elf, threw a snowball at an innocent and unsuspecting reindeer who only came to help. Poor Glitter was brutally attacked by the malicious elves and left cold and shivering in the corner while the foursome walked away, cackling at their antics. The poor deer left shortly after, presumably to report this attack to the Big Guy himself. One can only hope that Santa, who some have said has been a little lax in his disciplinary actions, will rouse himself and do something about these attacks. Stay tuned for more in tomorrow’s edition of the Gazette.

Pixie and Lil sat at a small table in the back of the Frosty Snowman Pub looking downcast. Nim and Figgy came over from the bar with four steaming cups of hot cocoa.

“Did you ask for extra chocolate in mine?” asked Lil.

“We asked for extra chocolate in all of them,” said Figgy. “It’s been a rough few days.”

The four friends stared into their cocoa mugs, each thinking of Sparkly Sprinkles’ latest article in the North Pole Gazette.

“She made us sound like a band of…hooligans,” said Pixie.

“And Glitter the weak victim of our shenanigans,” added Nim.

“Did you read how she portrayed Santa?” asked Lil. “As if he has been derelict in his disciplinary duties?”

Glitter cantered to their table, a steely look in her eyes. “All right gang, enough moping. Get yourselves together and get back to the hospital. It’s time to kick things up a notch.”

“What’s the point, Glitter? Smirky Snarkles is just going to twist everything around to make us look like four rowdy hoodlums,” grumbled Nim.

“Biggy, Lila, Nim, and Trixie…Trouble Makers,” sighed Lil.

“That’s it!” Glitter stomped a hoof. “Get it together you four. It’s time to get back to that hospital and construct the candy cane labyrinth. Santa has enough on his plate with the prob….well, just…move!”

The four elves popped up, spilling their hot chocolate, and zipped out the door. Glitter soon followed, never noticing the flash of white teeth and glittering eyes as Sparkly Sprinkles’ pen raced over her notebook in the corner of the Frosty Snowman.

The group landed back at the hospital. With no sign of the meddlesome reporter, they quickly got started with the construction of their Candy Cane Labyrinth.

“Here’s the map,” said Lil as she pulled out her design of a challenging candy cane labyrinth with twists and turns.

“I’ve made a few decorations for the entrance and exit.” Pixie pulled beautiful, sparkling swathes of material and props onto the floor.

“And here’s a riddle for the kids to solve,” said Nim.

I’m not a creature, but I’m known by a name.
In December, I play a part in a festive game.
Jolly and plump, dressed in red and white.
Seek me out where Christmas is bright.
Who am I?

“Ooo, ooo, I know this one!” shouted Figgy. “Bob the Builder!”

“You’re joking,” said Pixie with a snort.

At the look on Pixie’s face, Figgy cleared his throat. “Yes, of course I’m joking, it’s, it’s…”.

“Santa, Figgy. It’s Santa,” Lil shook her head.

“Yes,” said Figgy. “I knew that. Ahem. Well, I designed a few hidden doors and twists to make it extra fun. The first one turns into a candy cane slide and ends in a big tub of powdered sugar the kids will have to swim out of.”

“I’m not sure that’s such a—,” started Pixie.

“And then,” continued Figgy. “There’s this trap door that plunges the kids into a vat of maple syrup.”

“Erm, Figgy? I don’t know if—,” broke in Lil.

“Finally, this secret tunnel leads right to a hot chocolate waterfall!”

“No,” said Nim. “Just, no.”

Figgy’s face fell. “Fine. I guess we’ll just have a few dead ends and a small slide.”

Shaking his head, Nim turned to get started on the labyrinth.

Chaos at the Hospital: “Top Shelf Elves” Destroy Children’s Christmas Tree!

North Pole Gazette
Reported by Sparkly Sprinkles

It was a rough night for Nim, Lila, Trixie and Biggy. The four so-called “Top Shelf Elves” started the evening with an argument over who was in charge of the fort planning. Poor Biggy was shamed into coming up with lame jokes at the expense of the Central Park Snowmen, who are considered the most distinguished of the Men of Snow Social Club. Tsk tsk. Things only got worse from there as Bossy Nim pelted Trixie with pillows for not decorating quickly enough. Lila joined the fray in defense of her friend and by the end of the evening, pillow stuffing covered the cafeteria floor. The Christmas tree the children decorated was in shambles, and all four elves were shouting angrily and calling each other names like “Nincompoop” and “Ninnymuggin”. Will tonight’s plans bring this foursome back together? Stay tuned, this reporter is on the job!

“At least she got your name right, Nim,” grumbled Lil.

“How can she say the Christmas tree was in shambles? It’s not even true!” Pixie huffed.

“And the “pillow stuffing” on the floor was supposed to be snow!” added Nim.

Figgy sighed. “And she thought my jokes were lame.”

Lil shook her head, an angry glint in her eyes. “That no good, sneaky, self—”.

Nim put his hand up and whispered. “Don’t say anything you might regret.”

He jerked his head toward the kitchen counter where that no-good sneaky reporter was sitting, pen poised over her notebook. Smiling sweetly.

“Let’s just get busy with the window display,” said Pixie.

“And try very hard not to give her any ammunition for her ‘news’ story,” added Nim.

Lil and Figgy nodded in agreement.

Making a big show of friendship, the four elves all chuckled heartily and slapped each other on the back.

Don’t overdo it,” hissed Nim.

“Don’t overdo what?” Glitter landed beside them with a soft thunk, looked around the cafeteria, and spotted Sparkly. “Oh. I see.”

“Nevermind, let’s just get going,” said Pixie. “Did you bring the snow globe, Glitter?”

“Indeed I did.” Glitter nosed the globe from her satchel. It was a beautiful scene. Sparkling with snow, it showed children playing in a magical winter wonderland.

“Time to recreate the scene!” said Lil.

A flurry of activity ensued as the elves and Glitter whirled around the big picture window in the cafeteria making fake snow and soft snowballs. Nim directed traffic while Lil and Pixie created a magical playground scene where children played in the snow. Figgy followed behind, adding a comical twist to some of their creations.

“Figgy!” laughed Pixie. “What on earth are you doing?”

Figgy had changed a boy walking a dog into a dog walking a boy.

“Oh, just adding a bit of whimsy.” He smiled at the others, lobbing one of the snowballs in their direction.

That, as it turned out, was a mistake.

The snowball, not being real snow, bounced off Pixie and hit Lil. Bounced again, hitting Nim and careered off Nim’s head smacking Glitter right in the face. After a few minutes of stunned silence, chaos and laughter reigned.

All the while, Sparkly Sprinkles sat on the kitchen counter, her sharp red pen flying and a devious smile on her pointed face.

“This is Sparkly Sprinkles on location with…I’m so sorry, what was your name again?” Her voice was sickly sweet and her eyes glittered with mischief. Not the good, fun kind. The oh-I’m-going-to-make-your-life-miserable kind.

Figgy gulped. “F-Figgy, ma’am. I’m Figgy.” His eyes glowed as he gazed at the sparkling elf with her fluffy pink pen poised over her notebook.

“Ah, yes of course…Biggy.”

Figgy, enchanted by the chic elf with her long dark hair, big bright smile, and razor sharp nails, gazed at her in adoration.

Pixie rolled her eyes. “Figgy! Get over here and help us plan the fort. You’re in charge of jokes and surprises, remember?”

“Of course! Sorry!” With a bashful smile, Figgy zipped over to the pile of pillows and blankets in the cafeteria of the St. Francis Children’s Hospital. “What’s the plan?”

Nim, who had a grand vision for the massive fort they were about to build, took the lead.

“First, we need to set the tables up in two rows, end to end. Then, we can work with the blankets to make a big enough tunnel for all the kids to go through. Then Lil…”.

“I have a few ideas to add adventure to the experience. Surprises throughout. Pixie will help with the decorations.”

Pixie nodded. “And Figgy will add the jokes to make the kids laugh.”

Figgy cleared his throat, eying Sparkly Sprinkles who stood on the edge of the group, writing everything they said down. “Like, Why did the snowman cross the road?”

Pixie, Lil, and Nim stared expectantly at Figgy.

“To get to the other snowbank!”

Pixie raised her brow. “Er, that’s not–.”

But Sparkly Sprinkles’ tinkling laugh filled the room. “Oh Biggy! Aren’t you just hilarious!”

Figgy blushed.

Nim shook his head. “But it wasn’t even fun–”.

“Come, tell me what other…jokes you have in mind.”

Figgy, bright red with delight, dutifully followed the reporter to the corner of the room where she began talking animatedly and coaxing more lame jokes out of him.

“I don’t like her,” said Pixie.

“I don’t trust her,” said Lil. “What do you think, Nim?”

But Nim was staring after Figgy and Sparkly with a dark scowl on his face.

Mischief Makers 2023 Day 0: Prologue

Listen here!

In the heart of the North Pole, after all the Mischief Makers had flown to their assigned homes, Nim, Lil, Figgy, and Pixie, the Pole’s Top Shelf Elves, waited for Santa to send them off on their new assignment.

The previous year,  Mrs. Claus and Glitter had brought an oversight to Santa’s attention. The Children’s Hospitals of the world had no assigned elves. Shocked and dismayed, Santa had immediately created a new task force and made Nim, Lil, Pixie, and Figgy the leads. They’d been training for the job all break and were full of ideas to bring some joy and fun to the kids and staff at the hospital.

“Where do you think the big guy is?” asked Nim, craning his neck toward the workshop.

“I don’t know,” said Lil. “But we have to get going soon, it’s a big assignment, and there’s a lot to do before the morning.”

“And I want to check out the cafeteria,” added Figgy as he rubbed his belly. “When we went last week to scope it out, ‘Broccoli Bites and Pizza Puffs’ were on the menu.”

“Figgy,” said Pixie. “You don’t even like broccoli.”

“I know, but ‘Pizza Puffs’, Pixie.” Figgy rubbed his belly again. “Pizza Puffs.”

The sound of galloping hooves filled the night.

“Glitter!” The four elves cheered.

“Yes, yes. Good to see you all as well. Santa sends his apologies for not coming to send you off himself. There was a…situation at the Grime and Goo section of the Toy Department.”

“Yikes,” said Nim, eyeing shifty-eyed Glitter suspiciously. “That can’t be good.”

Glitter shook her head, pawed the ground nervously, and grumbled. “He sent me to deliver the news.”

Her tone put all four Mischief Makers on full alert.

Glitter sighed. “This isn’t going to be easy, but Santa could not talk them out of it. So…”.

“Spit it out, Glitter,” said Pixie.

“Yeah,” added Lil. “Spill the beans.”

“Rip the band-aid,” said Figgy.

“Cough it up,” joined Nim.

“Tell us the—.”

“Ok, ok!” brayed Glitter. “Your assignment this year is big news. An undertaking that no elf, gnome or sprite has ever tackled.”

All four nodded in agreement.

“As it is such a unique job, the Christmas Council feels it should have extra coverage, so…”.

“Glitter…,” prodded Pixie.

“Bottom Line: Sparkly Sprinkles of the North Pole Gazette will be reporting on this story.”

“Ok,” said Pixie. “Why is that a big deal?”

“Yeah,” added Figgy. “It’s her job, right?”

Glitter nodded. “Yes, but she has asked to report from the field.”

Figgy asked. “Gumdrop Field?”

“No,” sighed Glitter and then let it all out in a rush. “She will be tagging along with you, every night, for the entire season and providing daily headlines to the North Pole Gazette.”

Nim and Lil gaped. “Every. Single. Night?”

Glitter nodded.

“Am I missing something?” asked Pixie. “This is good news, right?”

“Oh no, Pixie,” said Nim. “This is definitely not good news.”

“Why?” asked Figgy in confusion. “Won’t this be great publicity for the program?”

Lil sighed. “You know how they always say ‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity?’”

Pixie and Figgy nodded, their pointed ears perked with curiosity.

“Well, they haven’t met Sparkly Sprinkles.”

Breakfast Pocket

by Joe

Clang! Clang! Clang! The fork was beating against the glass bowl, stirring the eggs till they were a nice golden color. The smell of cooking sausage filled the air, as I prepared the magnificent… BREAKFAST POCKET. Then the sound of a knife scraping a cutting board as I chopped the center of the bread out. A faint crackling sounded as I lay the bread on the hot pan then more sizzling as I poured the bright yellow egg into the middle. I put the sausage and cheese in with the egg and put the center of the bread back in. I flipped it and the golden brown scene before me made my mouth water. When it finished cooking and I bit into it, the crunch of flavor exploded in my mouth.

“The end of another spirited and successful season!” shouted Santa above the crowd. “Tomorrow, we start work on planning next season. But, tonight, we celebrate!”

As the night wore on, a rousing chorus of an old tune rumbled through the crowd of elves.

Pixie and Figgy followed Glitter to Santa’s house.

“What is this all about, Glitter?” asked Figgy.

“Yeah, why all the secrecy?” asked Pixie.

“Mrs. Claus will explain everything,” said Glitter.

When they walked into the cozy living room, Mrs. Claus sat in a rocking chair by the fireplace looking over a long, long list. Nim and Lil were already there, enjoying a steaming cup of hot maple syrup with extra sugar and candy cane sprinkles. At the sound of footsteps, Mrs. Claus looked up. “Ah, there you are. Thank you for coming to see me.”

“Of-of course Mrs. C. But…what is going on?” asked Pixie.

Mrs. Claus smiled and gestured to the corner of the room. “I’d like you all to meet Charly.”

A smallish elf with bright green eyes stepped out and nodded in greeting.

“Charly’s assignment was not on your list, but he needs our help. The job has become too big for him and he is having trouble keeping up. Poor Charly is in charge of a rather large assignment. How many children would you say?”

“Oh, 25, sometimes 30 kids,” shrugged Charly.

“Wow, Charly,” said Pixie with wide eyes. That was more than double the Malloys.

“Indeed,” said Mrs. Claus. “I would like the four of you to go with Charly and see what his situation is.”

“Pardon me for asking, Mrs. Claus, but does Santa know about this change in protocol?” asked Nim. “I only ask because he had to approve all the other assignments and if this house wasn’t on the list–”.

At the steely look in Mrs. Claus’ eyes, Nim abruptly stopped talking.

“Mr. Claus will need evidence and proof. He does not have time to travel to this…house…as he is preparing for tomorrow night’s deliveries. So, you four will go get the lay of the land and report back to me. Then, and only then, will we take this to Santa.”

At the looks on their faces, Mrs. Claus softened her tone. “It is better this way. Trust me.”

***

“You have your work cut out for you for sure,” said Lil.

Figgy and Nim were speechless as they stood over at the end of a long hallway in the Children’s Hospital. Sleeping children snoring softly in each room. The beeps and whirrs of medical equipment filling the air.

“And you’ve been working this place all by yourself?” asked Pixie.

Charly yawned. “Yep. For a few years now.”

Charly had dark circles under his eyes and he looked tired. Very, very tired.

“Why didn’t you ask for help sooner? This is a lot of work for one elf!” exclaimed Figgy.

“Oh I don’t know. I guess I just didn’t want to complain. These kids need joy in their lives and I try my hardest to give it to them, but I’m so darn tired. So, when I saw the advertisement for the B.R.A.T.T. crew I thought I’d just apply and see what happened.”

Pixie, Lil, Nim, and Figgy felt awful. They often lamented about how much work the Malloy house was, but there were only 12 of them. Looking around, there had to be at least 25 kids Charly was responsible for.

“Right,” said Lil. “You have help now and we are going to figure something out for next year as well. We need more Mischief Makers assigned to this hospital.”

“And,” added Pixie. “This isn’t the only Children’s Hospital in the world. We have to do something.”

“Right,” said Figgy. “We will talk to Santa after Christmas and work out a plan. For now, let’s get to work!”

When each child had a surprise at the end of their beds, the five elves were exhausted but happy with their work.

“Thank you so much Pixie and Figgy, Nim and Lil,” said Charly gratefully.

“Not at all, Charly,” said Pixie. “Next year, we’ll have a whole crew assigned, so you have the help you need.”

As each elf got into position, Figgy couldn’t help but think about all the other children’s hospitals in the world. Were they assigned elves? And if so, were they short staffed and burnt out on the job like Charly?
